The Path to Abundance

This past week I spent a bit of time in two different worlds. I was in Toronto for IGNITE, a business achievement conference put on by Richard Robbins International it was unbelievable. At the conference, I was surrounded by the most successful people in my business, and the energy reflected that everyone was dedicated to attracting success and giving before receiving.

After the first day of the three day conference, I spent some time with my friends from my alma matter, the University of Toronto. Most of them are just finishing up their undergraduate degrees, and are figuring out what to do with their lives.

One of them is graduating this year and just landed an ‘awesome’ job as a researcher at a marketing firm making 40K a year plus benefits. One of them is going to do a Masters because he doesn’t know what he wants to do. Some are going to law school, because it’s what is expected of them. None of them know what they want to do.

Through speaking with a few of them one on one, it became clear that they all wanted to have a lot of money when they were thirty, but they didn’t want to work hard for it, nor did they have an idea of how to do it. They had no discipline, and no vision. They didn’t know why they wanted the money, just that they wanted it so they could have the ‘freedom’ to sit around and watch ESPN on a large screen plasma TV all day long.

I shared a message with them, one that Rich Robbins has given to me. What I shared with my friends has the potential to change their lives, and it has the potential to change yours if you grasp it. Freedom is being able to get yourself to do what you need to do when you need to do it.

For example, this past year I didn’t have the freedom to go to Italy for a month with my gorgeous girlfriend Sarah because I didn’t have the discipline to earn $200,000 in profit. Some people don’t have the freedom to play the piano, because they never had the discipline to take lessons and practice every day. Most people don’t have the freedom to send their children to a private school, drive a nice car or live in a nice home because they never had the discipline to be financially responsible.

The cool thing is that you can change this at any time. Once you make an irrevocable decision that today will not be like yesterday, you will start to do what you need to get where you want to go. I’ve made an irrevocable decision. I know that in 2007 I’ll have the freedom to continue with my dreams, because I have the discipline to build a great business.

Most people don’t success because they aren’t disciplined. Failure is errors in judgment repeated every day. Success is doing the small things every single day that will build a great business and an incredible life. Discipline is the path to abundance.

Five Steps to Effective Goal Setting

November 6th, 2006

The main reason I moved my business to a Keller Williams Brokerage was because of the unparalleled education and training opportunities provided by the firm. Unlike most brokerages, top notch training is always offered (our Market Centre offers a diverse array of courses designed to improve us and our businesses on a daily basis), and this morning I found myself immersed in a session on Goal Setting, Time Management and Accountability, which our fearless leader (read: Operating Principle), Jim Reitzel was facilitating. Not surprisingly, the material quoted Brian Tracy, a personal hero of mine (who I did an interview with for Young Wealth Weekly) who is a leading authority on personal performance, goal setting, leadership, time management etc. Brian preaches about setting goals, and I’d like to share some of his thoughts with you. Here is part of an article Brian wrote for (well, thats where I found the article):

Setting Goals
In numerous conversations with top salespeople over the years, we’ve found that they all have one thing in common. They have taken the time to sit down and create a clear blueprint for themselves and their future lives.

Becoming a True Believer
Salespeople are amazed by the incredible power of goal setting and strategic planning. Believers often accomplish far more than they ever believed possible in selling and they ascribe their success to the deliberate process of thinking through every aspect of their work and their lives, developing a detailed, written road map, and continually working towards where they want to go.

The Definition of Happiness
Happiness has been defined as “The progressive achievement of a worthy ideal, or goal.” When you work progressively, step-by-step toward something that is important, you generate a continuous feeling of success and achievement. You feel more positive and motivated.

You feel more in control of their lives, happier, and more fulfilled. Feeling like a winner, you will soon develop the psychological momentum that enables you to overcome obstacles and plough [sic] through adversity as you move toward achieving the goals that are most important to you.

Through working with people like Richard Robbins and my coach Paul Gruber, and reading books by Napolean Hill, Brian Tracy, Jack Welch, Jim Collins, Zig Ziglar, Angela Mondou, I’ve developed a 5 step process to effective goal setting:

  1. Decide precisely what you want your life to look like in the following areas: Business, Financial, Family, Spiritual, Learning, Health, Intimate relationships
    • ex To have a business which provides 10 GREAT! jobs and generates $100,000 in revenue per month; To have an amazing relationship with your spouse who you love dearly; To have assets exceeding $1 million that generate passive income.
    • Do this for the short term (6 months) long term (3 and 5 years) and the horizon (10+ years). DREAM BIG
  2. Write down all of your goals in each area in the present tense simply enough so that a child can understand them – It must be specific and measurable.
    • ex ‘I go on one romantic dinner date per week with my spouse.’ ‘I earn $25,000 in monthly profit from my Real Estate business.’ ‘I have $5 million in assets that produce $400,000 annually in passive income.’
  3. Create an affirmation out of your major goals, and recite them twice daily (once in the morning and once at night).
    • ex Mine include most of my major life goals, including ‘helping 200 families move per year,’ ‘helping thousands of people build equity, allowing them to achieve financial freedom,’ ’sharing my knowledge with the intention of helping others,’ ‘providing comfortable accommodations for my tenants; engaging in win-win business transactions.’
  4. Write down ten goals every single morning, in the same format as in step 2, and identify which one goal is most important right now.
  5. Do something every single day towards the accomplishment of your major goal.

Icebreaker speach @ Toastmasters

To be delivered Wednesday, September 6th 2006
Thank you Madame Toastmaster.

Zig Ziglar once said that “you can get everything you want in life if you will just help enough other people to get what they want”

Mr Ziglar’s quote is one of many I read daily, and I try to live my life by it. I am a firm believer that if you make it a point to help the people in your life, your life will be filled with abundance.

As you know, this morning you are all going to learn a little bit about me. Since today’s theme is labour, I’m going to share some of my business and life philosophy with you, as well as give you a glimpse of what it is that I do.

Ever since I started my first business in high school designing client management software for Investment Advisors, I knew I was going to go into business for myself when I was done school, rather than take a job working for someone else.

After three years at the University of Toronto, where I studied Political Science and American History, I decided to sit down and figure out what I wanted to do over the next ten years. A family friend had started a real estate business a few years ago after a long career as an architect, and suggested that it would be a profession that suited me. I researched it, looked at the entry requirements, spoke to some people in the business, and agreed.

The business is very entrepeneurial by nature, and it gives me the opportunity to work closely with people every day and help them find homes and properties that were right for them.  Most of the time, I’m helping people with the biggest investment and decision they’ve ever made in their lives.

Jim Rohn says that Formal education will make you a living, but self education will make you a fortune. Although I attended what many would call the best school in Canada, I have learnt more in the past 8 months from seminars I’ve attended, books I’ve read, audio programs I’ve listened to, and people I’ve met. I now know that continuis learning is the key to excellence in business, and it’s something I’m committed to. Since I’m speaking to a group that meets at 7:30 on wednesday mornings to learn, I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir.

In January, I realized what I wanted to do. I was going to help people achieve financial freedom through smart real estate investments. I sat down, figured out what I needed to do, who I must meet, and what I had to learn in order to make this a reality, and I started working towards my goal.  So far this year, I’ve listed in excess of six and a half million dollars of property, and right now I’m working with more than a couple of investors who are looking to build or add to their portfolios. I’m helping people retire rich.

In the book Risk-Free Retirement: The Complete Canadian Planning Guide, the authors predict that at age 65, 1% of people will be wealthy, 4% of people will have an adequate income to retire on, 36% will be dead, and 59% will be dead broke.

At the end of this month, I’m putting on my first Wealth Building educational extravaganza, featuring a synergy of professional specialists who can help the individual investor buy property easily. I’m going to educate homeowners, and show them how they can start an investment portfolio and accumulate equity.
This is an early phase of my plan, which ultimately is to educate thousande on how they can build wealth and achieve financial freedom. Eventually, I want to start a speaking company, and educate full time.  I know what I learn in this room in the coming years will be a large component of my future speaking success.

One of the great assets I offer my clients is access to a network of professionals that can help them make an educated investment decision. As part of my initial consultation with a client, I’ll determine if they might need to meet with a lender, a property manager, or a lawyer who can help them structure a corporation to purchase the property.  This ‘team based’ approach offers convenience to my clients, since they don’t need to take a chance dealing with a random person on their own. I introduce them to highly qualified professionals at every step of the process.

I am blessed to love the work I do. When I help someone start towards securing their financial future, and understand how they can Retire Rich, I am fulfilled. I know I’m making a difference in someone’s life, and that makes it very easy to get up in the morning. I’m building my business on the model that our revenue and assets will increase as we can increase our clients wealth. This is a win-win arrangement.

I’d like to close by sharing My Enduring Purpose with you, which is what many would call a mission statement. I wrote this, and I read it every morning; it is the essence of my business and life philosophy.

It is to build relationships with and contribute significant value to my clients while attracting success with my integrity and actions. To help people I have relationships with achieve wealth, be it financial, emotional or spiritual, while living a balanced life of my own. To give back to the world before it gives to me.

Thank you Madame Toastmaster

Interview with Richard Robbins, Founder and CEO of RRi

This interview first appeared in Young Wealth Weekly.

Today I am joined by Richard Robbins, the Founder and CEO of Richard Robbins International . Rich has been gracious enough to take the time to give invaluable advice and knowledge to my readers, and I know that this will be a message which will inspire growth.

Q: How did you get started in the field of achievement coaching?

A: I started a Real Estate Company in 1988 and struggled for the first few years. I quickly discovered the key to success in the real estate brokerage business was to find salespeople with common values and be invested in helping them succeed. In other words the more I trained and coached them the more they became successful. The more successful they became, the more successful I became. Once I embraced this philosophy our company grew quickly until we had the highest production per agent of any company in our trading area.

Many of the sales people that worked for me told me I had a knack for coaching and should be sharing my ideas with many more than the sales people in our office. I started thinking that if I could have such a positive impact on the 23 sales people in my office, maybe I could teach the same thing to 1000’s. It wasn’t long after that I sold my company and opened Richard Robbins International and focused all my attention on achievement coaching.

Q: Why would an entrepreneur need a coach?

A: I think anybody can benefit from coaching in a big way. Think about this… what we presently know has gotten us where we are. The big question we need to ask ourselves is what do we need to learn to get where we want to go?? This is what coaching is about assisting entrepreneurs in moving to the next level through learning ways to produce greater results and then being held accountable to the actions necessary to produce the desired results.

Q: How much revenue & profit should my business be generating before I get involved with coaching?

A: I truly believe that the day someone decides to open a business they should hire a coach. A good coach will reduce their learning curve dramatically.

Q: What is the most important thing a young entrepreneur can do to become successful?

A: Don’t get into business to make money – get into business to serve and make a difference. Money is the bi-product of serving – making a difference for your customers in a way they have never experienced before. Money is really just an exchange of value we get for the value we bring to the marketplace. I have a fundamental belief, that if we go out everyday and do more than we get paid, the day will come when we get paid more than we do. There is no question that giving starts the receiving process.

Q: If there was only one message you could leave with our readers, what would it be?

A: Believe in themselves!! I have always said that it is not who people think they are that holds them back, it is who they think they are not. You must believe that anything is possible for you. We live in a wonderful world which is full of opportunity with so much available to us all – if we would just believe!!!

Q: Rich, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us today. In closing, can you suggest a short ‘Action Plan’ that our readers can use to implement your ideas to IGNITE their businesses and start attracting success?

A: Decide exactly what it is they want to create; develop a plan; take massive action; get a coach; focus on the customer first and yourself second
